About National Taiwan University Graduate Institute of Clinical Pharmacy
BackgroundThe forerunner of the Graduate Institute of Clinical Pharmacy (GIOCP) at National Taiwan University was the master program in Hospital Pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy. GIOCP was established in 2000 to keep pace with the trends in pharmacy education for nurturing pharmacy professionals to devote themselves to clinical services and improving quality of drug therapy as well as clinical research in Taiwan.MissionThe mission of GIOCP are to foster pharmacy professionals to devote to clinical services, teaching and research, and improve quality of drug therapy and related research in Taiwan.Teaching PhilosophyOur teaching philosophy are to cultivate clinical faculties with specialized expertise, and to enable individuals to devote to research in the areas of pharmacy administration and pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, clinical pharmacokinetics, and pharmacogenomics.CharacteristicsThe major purpose of GIOCP is to reinforce the professional curriculums of clinical pharmacy with emphasis on drug information and analysis, pharmacotherapy, clinical pharmacokinetics, pharmacoeconomics, and clinical pharmacy practice. During the nine-month clinical pharmacy practice, studen...ts will be able to improve their skills in communication, patient education, making therapeutic plan, and evaluating patients' medication.ResearchGIOCP focuses on clinical related fields, especially on theories and practices of clinical pharmacy and pharmaceutical administration, including drug efficiency and safety, drug-drug interaction, patient compliance, drug utilization evaluation, pharmacokinetics, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacy administration, social behavioral science and pharmacogenetics. Generally, researching topics of GOICP could integrate the field of pharmacy and medicine and act as the bridge connecting basic and clinical sciences.Future ProspectsGIOCP strives to become an international first-rate university by expanding the subjects of clinical pharmacy practice program and strengthen interactions with other school around the world. Based on the goals mentioned above, in 2007, GIOCP proposed an international-exchanging project. The project provides students with opportunities to go abroad and participate in the clinical pharmacy practice training course of the schools or hospitals which cooperate with NTU. We will also arrange a faculty going with students, who can act as an assistant for students and bring back the experiences and advantage which could make clinical pharmacy education and pharmaceutical care in Taiwan better. Considering that NTU School of Pharmacy will change their pharmacy program into six-year Pharm. D. program in 2009 which will add more curriculums related to clinical pharmacy, GIOCP will start the Clinical Pharmacy Fellowship Program in 2008 to train our clinical pharmacists to become faculties and plan to set up the Ph. D. program in clinical pharmacy-related fields to cultivate members leading pharmaceutical researches in the future. Hoping through our effort, we can lead the way in advancing the profession of clinical pharmacy and enhance health in Taiwan.
