Academic Neurohospitalist (MD/DO) - UNC School of Medicine
The Division of Comprehensive Neurology within the UNC Department of Neurology is seeking a full?time Neurohospitalist to join our dynamic academic faculty. This position offers the opportunity to provide high?quality inpatient neurologic care while engaging in medical education, quality improvement, and scholarly activity within a nationally recognized academic medical center. The appointment is a fixed?term Clinical (non?tenure) track position, well suited for clinicians who are passionate about inpatient neurology and teaching in a collaborative, learner?rich environment. UNC Hospitals serves as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, a Level I Trauma Center, and a Level IV Epilepsy Center, providing robust infrastructure to support complex neurologic care. Faculty have full access to advanced neuroimaging, EEG and neurodiagnostic services, and integrated teleneurology resources. The institution offers strong system?wide and service?line support, with significant planned growth across the Neurosciences service line. Opportunities for leadership and program development are available based on experience, interest, and departmental needs.
Service Model & Coverage
Primary inpatient neurology and consultative care with no Stroke or NeuroICU service
Daily volumes include approximately 10-15 primary patients and 5-8 consults, supported by an APP managing 2-5 intermediate?care patients
Weekend coverage is shared on a 1:3-1:4 rotation
Schedule & Call Structure
Predictable, block?based schedule with a rotating mix of clinical responsibilities:
7 in?person inpatient service days and 4 Tele?Neurology days (8:00 AM-5:00 PM) per 3?week cycle
Nights covered by fellows or a nocturnist structure
At?home call only, limited to transfer requests and resident support
No Stroke call responsibilities
Optional participation in additional activities based on qualifications and interest
Practice Scope
Balanced primary service and consultative inpatient neurology
No Stroke service
No NeuroICU coverage
Team?Based Support
1 Advanced Practice Provider (intermediate care focus)
The Neurohospitalist will be actively involved in teaching medical students, neurology residents, off?service residents, and fellows. Educational responsibilities include bedside teaching, direct supervision, and required evaluation of trainees. Participation in additional educational activities is optional and is recognized within the compensation plan. This position is a Fixed?Term Clinical Track appointment with a clinician?educator focus and includes a clear, established pathway for promotion. UNC fixed?term promotion criteria are available through Faculty Affairs.

Research & Scholarly Support
Clinical FTE: 0.9 cFTE
Access to research infrastructure if pursuing trials or grant?funded work
Encouragement and incentive support for:

Areas of emphasis include:
- Inpatient neurology outcomes
- Length of stay and readmissions
- Post?discharge care planning

Qualifications
MD or DO from an accredited medical school
Board?Certified or Board?Eligible in Neurology
Eligible for medical licensure in North Carolina
Fellowship training in Neurohospitalist Medicine or equivalent experience
