The Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for Section Head of Adult Neurocritical Care. This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished academic leader to direct and expand a nationally recognized neurocritical care program within one of the country’s premier academic neurology departments.
The Section Head will provide strategic clinical, academic, and operational leadership for a high-acuity neurocritical care program, internationally recognized for excellence in patient care, research, and education. The position offers the opportunity to shape the future of neurocritical care within a rapidly expanding program supported by outstanding institutional resources, collaborative faculty, and a deeply integrated neuroscience environment.
The section of Neurocritical Care currently includes eight faculty and 18 Advance Practice Providers, and delivers cutting-edge, multidisciplinary clinical services at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, a nationally ranked academic medical center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and Level I Trauma Center. The Neurocritical Care Unit is among the largest in the United States and is currently expanding from 32 to 44 beds to meet the growing regional and national demand. The unit is equipped with exceptional clinical infrastructure, including dedicated in-unit CT and PET imaging capabilities, supporting rapid diagnostics, advanced neuromonitoring, and the care of highly complex neurological and neurosurgical patients. The program contributes to one of the nation’s highest-volume neurology inpatient services.
The Section Head will foster a collaborative, multidisciplinary model of care, working closely with colleagues in neurosurgery, neuroradiology, vascular neurology, epilepsy, trauma surgery, anesthesiology, and critical care medicine. Key priorities include advancing clinical innovation, optimizing patient-centered and team-based care delivery, enhancing quality and safety initiatives, and leading strategic faculty recruitment aligned with programmatic growth.
Education is a core mission of the Section. The Section Head will oversee a robust educational portfolio spanning undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate training programs. The section supports an ACGME-accredited two-year Neurocritical Care with eight clinical fellowship positions, as well as a dedicated research fellowship that prepares future leaders in academic neurocritical care.
The Section also maintains one of the nation’s leading neurocritical care research enterprises, with faculty holding independent NIH funding and leading investigations in translational neuroscience, clinical trials, health services research, and outcomes-based investigations. The Section Head will be expected to articulate and advance a strategic vision for continued research growth and interdisciplinary collaboration with Washington University’s robust biomedical research ecosystem. The Department of Neurology is ranked #2 nationally in NIH funding among neurology departments and more than 185 faculty members with over $101 million in annual NIH funding.
Qualified candidates will possess an MD, DO, or MD/PhD degree; be board certification in Neurology and Neurocritical Care (ABPN); and be eligible for Missouri licensure. Candidates should qualify for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher and demonstrate a distinguished record of academic accomplishment, leadership, mentorship, and program development.
